AHOY MATES!

Though it premiered many moons ago in the States, Jake has finally come to Canada. This is the children's show I have been dedicating many hours of my life on. The series is drawing to it's end of production and I am so happy that everyone finally has the chance to see what hard work the studio has been putting in. If you have young kids, I suggest you make them check it out. The show airs on Disney Junior (previously Playhouse TV)It would be nice for them to support the show, and 2D animation in general!

I like it rough. (animation that it!)

EDIT: Today feels like one'oh'dem good days. I have decided to post one of the little comic strips which I submitted to
The Escapist (host of Zero Punctuation videos) to try and become their regular webcomics guy. They are having a competition for the position. Go check it out! If I fail miserably I will post the rest here, and probably continue the series right on my blog until I get bored of doing it. Enjoy.

EDITx2: If anyone is noticing the videos are down, it is Blogger. I am in the process of updating everything over to vimeo now. Thanks for everyone who has brought this issue to my attention.

This is my animation at nearly 50% complete though it really doesn't seem that way because many of the bigger more animation-heavy scenes are the ones still in limbo. I unfortunately have a lot of timing and composition issues from scene to scene which I will have to tackle soon. Right now if feels paced so fast that you can hardly follow it. I will add some breathing time.

Welcome to 2010.

This is a production work-flow test for Pest Control. This is Scene 10 and will potentially go in to the film unchanged from what you see here. Below are paintings which I have been working on. It may be some time before I post the whole film up on my blog. Every once in a while I will put pencil tests and completed scenes like the one above so enjoy those.

(That last one is me thanking my dead computer for frying after a days worth of work before I could back it up. I'm a PC and Blue Screen of Death was my idea.)

Performance Test - Rough Animation

Monday, November 30, 2009

Hello All!

I am back from California. CTN-X was informative, inspirational and exciting. The weekend was packed with workshops, lectures and portfolio reviews. I had a lot of great reviews from people and studios that I have respected for years and finished off the weekend with a tour of Walt Disney Studios and Feature Animation. I want to give a big 'Thank You' to everyone who made this weekend and this event possible. It provides a great new experience for people interested in commercial character animation and offers talent and lectures you would not see at OAIF or Comic-Con.

I made some suggested revisions to the layouts for Pest Control and compiled them all into a reel. It is not up to the standard I am willing to post yet so for now I will leave you with my character action analysis. I am testing out the rat, seeing if I can fine-tune him to a easier character to animate.

Run fatty, Run!

What have I done?
So I just spent all night awake and animation for the student organized 24 Hour Film-a-thon. During this time students create, board and animate a short film and see what the end product looks like after a crazy caffeine filled, sleep-deprived night. Some students decided to collaborate while others (like myself) worked solo. This is in no way a portfolio piece and I wish I had more fun with it. Here for your viewing, my film from the 24 Hour Film-a-thon!

Now back to my 5,760 hour film.

So, I have only mentioned it in passing but I happen to be working on a film right now. That film, temporarily titles 'Food For Thought' stars a obese man who has a love for sugary sweets who gets pulled into a magical candy land and if forced to deal with it's none-to-cheery citizens. This is my 3rd Year Group Project and I am working with an amazing group of people. We go by the name of the 'Classy Asses'.
Featured below is my first animation test of Russell, the character.

Russell ROUGH Animation Poses:

I am not going to be posting too much film stuff on there has I want to be able to present it in it's final state when everything is said and done. This term will also be about 2 other important things. One of which is my portfolio for an internship which I have this summer. I have a few studios in mind and hope that when they see my portfolio they will have me in mind too. Here is some stuff I am throwing together for that.

ROUGH Animation Pose Test:

These two pieces are bothing beind cleaned up, scanned and coloured for my portfolio. The second of them however is a concept sketch which is 4 years in the making. I will be talking about this soon.
Keep checking back!

After taking some time to tweak some of my issues with it, I am not a place with my AA where I am pretty happy to call it complete. For those who are curious about what has changed from the version below I can tell you. I added an overlay on top of the dogs arm to fix my match line which didnt do it's job. I moved the building and tree out of frame more on the jumps and added a slight blur in after effects to give more focus to the dog. Not too much.

This A.A was quite a learning experience. D.Q, the third year animation instructor was a massive help in many different stages so I owe him a huge "thank you" for putting up with my many questions during revisions and colouring. If you would like a re-cap of all the hard work I have put into this thing you can click on the right bar under "Action Analysis", or just scroll back in the history.

Thus brings me to the end of the term. The group film is coming along. We have lost a few members, all are brilliant artists and I hope they find what they are looking for in their future goals. The film, temporarily titled "Food For Thought" will be released in April and may be up online shortly after some screenings. I have not shown any production word for that as it is a collaborative effort, hopefully next term I can bring something your way.

This now starts my holiday break, I have a few projects planned for my demo reel for the next few weeks. Keep an eye out!

The Last of the Almighty Nine

Today I unfortunately heard great animator Ollie Johnston passed away at 95. He was one of the 9 Old men who really turned Disney and classical and feature animation into what it truly became. Many of the great animators of today learned most of what they know from these greats and it must have been an honor and privilege to work hand in hand with these fine gentlemen. Ollie was one of my personal favorites of these greats and it is personally upsetting to see him pass.

I'm stuck on animation..

..because animation is stuck on me!

My beak-sync and one of the better animations from this year/term. Commence summer animations projects which will prove to be much stronger, as is their intention.

enjoy.
