Best life drawing class.... ever!

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

So here is another update. All text, so if you are looking for something pretty look at, hold on for a few days.

1. First things first, Emily got into Animation last night and I want to congratulate her on her success, she deserves it so much because she is a hard word and a very talented girl. Those in animation, keep an eye on her in coming years. I expect he to grow substantially in talent.

2. I have started working for my old tutor, Alex Sinenko (4th yr) colouring on his film. For grunt work is actually a lot of fun. It is also a great way for me to build up screen credit and apparently will become a great source for beer. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity, Alex. I hope I can help out more in the coming week.

3. T-Shirts are going well (designs below) and we are expecting to hear back today from 2 separate faculty members about a larger order. Which is a great thing because it could substantially lower the print price of the shirts which means no losses on our part. For anyone who reads this you still have one day (WED 12-4) to grab your shirt. We expect them in 2 weeks.

4. My painting will be scanned when I get it back from Tim and I will throw it up on here. I am also 3/4 done my Rotoscope for DigiTools. It is a Flash file so I am expecting to throw it up on here as it is "technically" an animation. We get a new layout assignment next week, and got our new painting one yesterday. My portfolio for life drawing is due next week and I have nothing for it (xlife anyone?) and I will get my final animation for first year assigned to me on Thursday!

5. Looking for a website to host my website. I am purchasing a domain soon. PleaseOhPlease!

.. is that everything new? Feels like so much more. Oh, Colorado is still in the works is anyone knows info U.S. student Visa info please email me at

Essay DONE!
Kitchen Painting DONE!

Jonathan, What Have You Been Up Too?

The best way to look at my life from an outside perspective is in sections, because I would not force any living soul to juggle all the sections like I am doing as it is cruel to all living beings.

I am finishing up the first year of animation in the next four weeks. Many of the assignments I have been given are my final assignment of the year which feels like a huge joy because I have been trying to juggle personal stuff into my schedule and they either bump school related things down, or crash and burn which is not cool either.
I cannot post storyboarding as I really have nothing worth showing but am excited because I am going to throw a wicked illustrative style on them. I also have a 1500 word essay on a classic cartoon next week which I am having severe writers block over. I can bust it out in a good hour or and am not worried.
The first noteworthy piece of this batch is painting. We are required to do this assignment in 2 pieces, one I am well ahead on, the other well off schedule (blame a personal project) which makes me a saaad panda.

This is a recreate of an original trilogy concept art by Ralph McQuarrie.

Slowly but surly is my kitchen painting. I am excited to finish it, but have not the drive today. So I will dedicate later in the week to it, or maybe next weekend. I will be done and fabulous!

Next, notably is my Tank for Layout class. Though I absolutely hated the concept behind this assignment (essentially give a vehicle personality.. like Cars!) I am happy with the turn out. Can you get where I am going with it.

Forward March! Left, Left, Right, Left. Next on this apparent lengthy list, is character design. We had to come up with a head. rotate it and show 3 expressions and 2 antic poses. I am happy with it.

Sprak the Mandrill (a shiny dollar for someone to guess where the name is from!.. I lie. I can't afford guessing games) ... I went to the zoo, but currently my instructor has my art. So I will scan it when I get it back. There is one drawing I am fond of.

That concludes my weekly school progress, but what about the rest of my life?

Well, Emily, who is the next level of importance of my life is amazing! At least I think she is! Every day I grow fonder of this girl. She is a great person and an even more talented artist. She should be finding out about animation soon, I wish he luck but I really do not think she needs it. I was at her house on Saturday to take a phone interview, about an internship. I do not want to give away too much information yet but it is for 2 months in Colorado.

Here to be exactly. I am planning on going around the June and July time, which sucks to leave everyone for the summer, but I can gain so much from going and the thought of living connected to a studio and learning new and awesome things gets my bloody flowing fast through my Canadian veins!

The Tshirts is the next big thing. It has actually been a large time consumer. I first had to spread the word. Then sort through submitted design and assist in narrowing them down to the final 10, then they were voted on for the final 3 and low and behold:

the cream of the crop of 06/07. I apologies for the rush. But to anyone who checks my blog. TShirts are on sale Mon-Weds and check at the school for times. The first 2 are done by Sam Bradley and Mark Stanleigh, the third is a 3rd year who's name is passing me (sorry) top stuff though. I am proud of my work in getting this running and it is coming to a close and then I will have a handful (thank Jesus!) of extra time. So, you may remember the digital Ben Folds and the Digital scene painting. Neither have progressed much due to the level of my life and I may can them or have them be WIPs over the summer. But I have actually been steadily working on my website. All the html is done I am just cropping and thumb nailing my favourite images to throw up, but here is a teaser.

The inline frame is in the animation paper,as you can probably guess. I based it on my Flipbook page I posed earlier. On top of that I have been thinking about my friend Justin and mines graphic novel which I am going to toy around with this summer if Colorado allows me. I haven't played around ideas yet, but I have been meaning too, and have read the descriptions a few times. Enticing, that's what I have to say. Hopefully soon. I have also been working through the tour offices for about 8 hours a week, which is like one shift for any normal person, but any normal person isn't in ani-freakin-mation!

So that is my life currently. Doesn't read like alot, but I can assure you it sure feels it. Maybe I am just a baby. Probably it. Until my next rant/post remember one thing: only you can prevent forest fires.

I have had too much going on and feel overwhelmed on a serious run of bad luck. I will be glad when this black cloud passes over my head. (I use the term "when" loosely, as there is a strong chance that the cloud will never leave)
Enjoy Bear.

This is my page for the Animation Yearbook:

It being portfolio time, and gaining few requests to see my portfolio I have decided to place it online for everyone (mainly Fundi's) viewing pleasure. (Don't steal my ideas)
I received and 82/100 which is better than most of the people I know, though I am sure many people in my class can testify to getting a higher score as many people in my class are awesome artists. Many of this stuff is embarrassing by my current standards, but it got me in, to i still hold some sort of love. Here goes:

The Tale Of An Assignment I Got Sick Of..

I may look at it again over the break-week, time allotting. Hopefully everyone enjoys.

Science Damn You, Winter!

Take your room. Open all the windows and let winter drift in. Now, turn on your A/C and set it relatively cold. Done that? GUESS WHAT!? My apartment is probably colder than yours!
I lie, but it is still damn cold, and distracting. I have on 3 layers of socks and am wrapped from head to toe in a puffy blanket with only my face and hands exposed. My room is screwed beyond belief.

Tonight was intended to be a homework-crushing night. But working in extreme winter-like cold is near impossible. I will post my accomplishments for the eve (and earlier this week) and let you look at it and laugh as I did not have as an effective night as I had wished for. Blasted cold.

Kitchen Layout

Technically you have seen this, but this is the cleaned up line work for the final. You will notice the missing table and bowl. They are the overlay and held-cel for the assignment and I didn't feel like scanning them.

Character Design

I have an otter. He crushes clams and eats them on his tummy as well as squishes his face in many cute ways.

Our next assignment is a still life (whoopee....) we had to do one in class, this is what I turned out in under 2 hours. Not awful. My final for this project should be up next week.

Everyone's favourite turtle murdering Italian brothers from Brooklyn. Tonight we watched Super Mario Brothers (live -action movie) at school. Obviously my inspiration, among other art I have seen. Woot!

That is all I have to say. My animation is on hold for the night, but soon I will crush it like a clam shell on my belly. Oh, otters.

I didn't want to make a new post for it. I finished my coloured Pink Panther Walk Cycle and added sound in Digital tools class today, and here it is!

Son of a Batch (creeper edition)

Where to start? It seems like as of late I have only been putting up process animations and not any final works or animations. I have to work extensively on Young Hercules this weekend, expect the final in a few weeks. I am going to nab the Final version of the Pink Panther Walk Cycle and the coloured version for Digital Tools and throw them up on here soon. To hold you off, however, I have backed myself up with a long list of newly scanned art and such. See below:

Painting Class:

Science fiction, night and day scene. One is rendered digitally (for reference) the other in guache on an acrylic background.

Character Design:

An otter, my next character for character design class. Probably more to come on him shortly.

Literally just finished it. I decided to so a Firefly-esque kitchen, for layout class. I then coloured it Feng Zhu stylz in Photoshop.

Fan Art:

Ben Folds keeps me awake and rocking while making panthers walk. He deserves my gratitude in drawing form. (See below for colour W.I.P)

Personal WIP(work in progress):
Both of these have been put on hold until I have more free time.

And as promised in the title.. CREEPER DRAWINGS:

Jonathan draws super models from photo reference... creepy

Jonathan draws people at lounge night, maybe they should kick him out?

Many faces of the Trafalgar Rd. Food Court.

3 classmates.. Sorry Mitch, Adam and Wayne.

Until next time.. unless I die.
